Release Train Engineer

In the Scaled Agile Framework, the Release Train Engineer is a coach and leader for ARTs. The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is responsible for leading and implementing the Agile Release Train (ART).

Responsibilities of the Release Train Engineer

As a leader, the RTE has several responsibilities. Some of the key responsibilities are listed below:

  • Managing people: Guidance and motivation
  • Coaching and education: Teaching teams, leaders, and scrum masters
  • Monitoring of ARTs: Reporting success
  • Planning Program Increments: Creating and communicating annual calendars for PIs and Iterations
  • Creating improvement roadmaps: Analyzing actions and activities

Tasks of the Release Train Engineer

The Release Train Engineer is responsible for PI Planning and facilitating the ARTs events and processes, as well as:

  • Motivating Agile Teams to achieve better results
  • Driving a program forward
  • Facilitating PI Planning
  • Minimizing risks

Project Manager vs. Release Train Engineer

A project manager coordinates teams and plans projects, while RTEs mentor, encourage, and enhance all teams and the work environment. Both perform risk management, time management, people and communication, or cost management.
